History of Carl Jr
Carl Karcher, a truck driver, and his partner, Margaret Karcher, borrowed $311 from their Plymouth car in 1941. They added $15 in savings to buy a hot dog cart at the midpoint of Florence and Central in Los Angeles. They sold hot dogs, chili dogs, and tamales for a dime, and soda for a nickel from their newly bought cart. Within a few years, four hot dog stands were owned and run in Los Angeles by Carl and Margaret. The Karchers moved a short distance to Anaheim, California, in 1945.
They opened Carl’s Drive-In Barbecue, their first full-service restaurant, at 1108 N. St. Palm.
Karcher opened the first two Carl Jr restaurants in Anaheim and Brea in 1956. They were a smaller version of Carl’s Drive-In Barbecue restaurant.
By the 1960s, in Southern California, Carl was running 24 restaurants. The company was founded as Carl Karcher Enterprises, Inc. in 1966. They began a substantial expansion of the chain in 1968.
In Arizona and Texas, Carl Jr chains failed to achieve success, perhaps fading expectations of expansion to other states. While, states such as Nevada, Oregon, and Washington proved successful. Karcher and the board of directors started to fight over promotions and business strategies throughout the 1990s. This included the chain’s attempt at dual branding with chains such as The Green Burrito and its new promotional campaigns.
On October 1, 1993, Karcher was fired as the company’s chairman by its board of directors. Now this chain has plenty of restaurants in many states of America.

Collaboration with Hardees
Both Hardee’s and Carl Jr have effectively been operating as one brand since 1997. CKE Restaurants announced plans to try to differentiate their identities in 2018.
Part of the initiative included remodeling many Hardee’s restaurants as well as giving separate marketing campaigns to both brands. Both chains had the same menu at the time of the split. CKE noted that they would adapt progressively over time, and with some overlap.
As an addition to their menu, Carl Jr introduced a Beyond Meat Patty in January 2019. They were one of the first large chain restaurants to bring their menu with a vegan-friendly patty. They rolled it out to all their places.
Soon after introducing plant-based burgers to their menus, Burger King and several others followed.
Carl Jr initiated a publicity campaign in 2005 featuring under dressed models suggestively posing to attract the demographic of “young guy”. In Entrepreneur magazine, the advertisements were criticized for objectification of women and prompted calls to boycott Carl’s Jr.
Karcher objected to the sexualized nature of the company’s advertisements in the years before his death in 2008. It was reported “just heartbroken” that such an amoral act was taken by a company he formed on Christian principles.
CBD Burgers at Carl Jr
They’re, after all the first national food chain to sell food flavored with cannabis. But maybe that’s not the right way to go. They introduced it for one day with the name Rocky Mountain High Cheese Burger Delight. It was sold only on 20th April in Denver location only.
It is made with two patties of beef, Pepper Jack cheese, fries, pickled jalapeños, and Santa Fe Sauce flavored with CBD. The burger costs $4.20.
For those who don’t know about CBD, no this burger isn’t going to get you high. CBD is fully non-psychoactive.
